Hello students,
For homework, please respond to the following prompt:
The Middle Passage is known as the largest graveyard on Earth due to millions of slaves that died from dieases and health related issues, or killed from rebelling against or disobeying slave ship masters and crewmen.
So write a response explaining the effect of the metaphor of the Middle Passage being the world's largest graveyard by relating it to a major diaster that has happen inside the United States? And how can that diaster be named as the largest graveyard in America?
Middle Passage killed many innocent lives that could have been spared. It reminds us to open our innocent eyes to the reality of life. Cancer can definitely be classified as the largest graveyard in America because it has killed many innocent lives and there is no widely known cause. I've had a personal experience with cancer and it's taken many people I love.
ReplyDeleteI think Kelsey's response is really interesting. I would have never thought of a disease as creating the graveyard, but it is so true. Of course, the tragedy of 911 comes to mind. With so many lives lost (and the current controversy over how to deal with Ground Zero), it is hard to not mention it as one of the largest graveyards in American history.
ReplyDeleteMiddle Passage as the world's largest graveyard reminds us today that so easily heads can be turned the other way by popular belief and as a result lives are wrongfully destroyed. I agree with Kelsey and Alex; however, I feel that oppression against different races and sexes could also be considered the world's largest graveyard. I mean, people lose their confidence, their strength, their purpose, their value... a piece if not all of them dies out. When we strip rights and priveledges based on race, religion, sex, etc., we commit murder. The U.S. is guilty of promising the freedom and love, then starving and beating those hopes and dreams to the grounds we so "heroically" ripped from the American Indians. I dunno if this is right, but thought it was worth noting as a possibility.
ReplyDeleteI believe our world's largest grave yard is from the death of suicides. Even though it is a topic most schools and news do not draw too, it is still a real concern that a lot of students need to be aware of. They also need to be aware of the causes and the triggers that can occur to cause someone to commit the act. Bullying is a concern in schools, but I believe there needs to be a stronger fight against it so that students do not feel threatened at school, and believe their only way out is by death.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emily. I think the largest graveyard can be considered the one formed from suicides. It is a subject that is not covered enough. If it were it would definitely not be an issue and students would get more help for their problems.
ReplyDeleteThe trail of tears is a pretty literal giant graveyard in itself, but, it's similar to the middle passage except that involved deaths of native americans instead of slaves...although native americans were sort of treated like slaves, too...
ReplyDeletei think that there are many giant graveyards that exist on Earth. there is the middle passage, trail of tears, great wall of china and the concentration camps in germany. unfortunately, many cultures over many generations have chosen to extinguish groups of people they have found to be expendable. my hope is that we learn from these experiences so that we do not repeat them in future generations.
